World Asthma Day 2022 - Closing Gaps in Asthma Care

It sure was interesting attending the World Asthma Day Conference 2022 , and I learnt quite a bit about that scary respiratory disease that affected some of my friends and family members…


The event was officiated by the Minister of Health, YB Khairy Jamaluddin, and held to commemorate the celebration of this year’s World Asthma Day in collaboration with the Malaysian Thoracic Society (MTS), Malaysian Family Medicine Specialists’ Association (FMSA), Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS), AstraZeneca Malaysia and NVS - Novartis Malaysia….


This half-day conference discussed the challenges and solutions in addressing the gaps in asthma care in Malaysia in line with the World Asthma Day theme this year: Closing Gaps in Asthma Care. 


Did you know that in Malaysia, asthma affects approximately two million children and adults with respiratory diseases sadly being the second most common cause of death within the Ministry of Health hospitals.


The lack of recognition of asthma as an area of focus in the national healthcare agenda, in particular has been cited as one of the major barriers in enabling earlier and equitable access to both diagnosis and evidence-guided treatment among the asthma patients in the country…

I like that how healthcare experts, patient representatives and industry partners have come together to explore the potential of making asthma as a key non-communicable disease (NCD) priority area in Malaysia in the conference…


The conference ended with the pledge signing by multi-stakeholders to express their joint commitment in improving asthma care in Malaysia while witnessed by YB Khairy in his role as our country’s Minister of Health…


YB Khairy also officiated the relaunch of Asthma Malaysia website which will be serving as a one-stop information hub for the public on asthma.


Asthma Malaysia is a non-profitable organization with the mission to serve as a credible resource on asthma, to raise awareness of best standards of care and to empower patients in the management of their asthma.


Asthma Malaysia’s vision is to be Malaysia’s leading portal for asthma with a view of creating more informed and empowered patients.

MyCycleXpo 2022 Calls Out to Cycling Business Owners and Bicycle Aficionados

RISE International Sports Exhibition Sdn. Bhd. will be organising the nation’s biggest cycling expo of its kind.

MyCycleXpo 2022 will be held from 29th July 2022 until 31st July 2022... The expo will be showcasing cycling related products and brands and is anticipating approximately 30,000 visitors.

MyCycleXpo 2022 will also be the platform to source cycling activewear and fitness lifestyle apparel, specifically curated to maximise performance for cyclists on the go.

The travel exhibitors are from travel agencies and resorts offering cycling tourism packages and cycling activities. Helping cyclists to plan the dream cycling vacations with ease of mind. The healthcare booths will be offering nutritional supplements and healthcare devices to boost sports performance or maintain a healthy lifestyle. Visitors can also learn useful tips on the latest dietary nutrition, ways to optimise recovery, and how to improve cycling performance. Finally, the lifestyle cafe where the cycling community replenishes & recharge while experiencing the latest in fitness & cycling themed F&B concepts. 

MyCycleXpo 2022 is set to be the meeting point of Asia’s cycling clubs and influencers.

Activities
Visitors will stand a chance to ride with big names in the cycling industry in Ride with The Stars. Anuar Manan, former professional cyclists from the TSG Cycling Team with other cycling stars and celebrities will lead the Ride with Stars segment.

Other entertainment and showcases include the BMX Stunt Show, buskers performance, mini concert, product launches, the Hall of Fame featuring the fascinating history of cycling in Malaysia, from its earliest days of adoption, right up to the modern era here today with Malaysia recognised internationally in the cycling industry and event booths, bringing forth the cycling event organisers involving Le Tour de Langkawi, Jelajah Malaysia, GFNY World Championship and many more.

The standard rate for local exhibitors is RM5,500.00 per year, eligible for all exhibitions under MyCycleXpo and the international rate is USD2,500.00 (RM10,977.50). 

Malaysian businesses who are interested to join may grab the early bird slots which is going for RM3,800.00 for a limited time only. 

Exhibitors will be provided with a standard Shell Scheme booth including a fascia board with 9 square metre (3 metre x 3 metre) exhibitors’ booth showcasing the number and company name, 2 units fluorescent lights, 1 unit 13-amp electrical point, an information desk, 2 chairs, 1 waste bin and needle-punch carpet flooring within the booth area.

JUNGLE HOUSE’S FIRST HONEY LIFESTYLE STORE IN MALAYSIA

If you are a honey lover like me in KL, chances are you would have come across Jungle House while window shopping at in One Utama Shopping Centre, Mid Valley Mega Mall, Pavilion Elite, Central I-City, D Pulses or the IOI City Mall… or if you are in Penang, then perhaps at the Queensbay Mall… Before I really got to know the brand, I was a fan of the freshly made honey drinks they sold… 

Anyway am here to share more about Jungle House….

Jungle House is touted the first honey specialty store in Malaysia, and stands unique with their tagline “All Things Honey” - advocating appreciation for honey and cultivating a honey culture for health-conscious Malaysians….

And fans of Jungle House or even fans of honey or those who know the many benefits of this liquid gold will be excited to know Jungle House has a unique 9th outlet, which also happens to be the first with a café concept at Bangsar, Jalan Telawi 3…..

The quaint-looking Bangsar outlet is a quintessential lifestyle haven with an alfresco and in-door setting where customers can leisurely enjoy a wide repertoire of honey-inspired F&B items including Honey Breakfast Oats, Russian Honey cakes, varieties of Croffles (cross between croissant and waffle), honey coffee, tea and juices – all paired with specific types and flavours of honey….

The new café allows you to stop by for a quick bite and sip of your favourite honey cakes and beverages in a very cosy and therapeutic environment…. 

And well of course, you can also shop for your favourite honey, beverage, honeycombs to various thematic and beautifully-crafted gift sets and personal care items like totebags, honey soap series, face masks and other merchandises here at this Jungle House store!!!!

Yours truly was one of the lucky ones invited over to check out this amazing store and it was so much more then I could imagine!!!

The idea of Jungle House was conceptualised on an adventurous trek into the deep jungles of Garut in West Java, Indonesia many years ago when the co-founders and owners , husband and wife team - Mr Paul Poh and Ms Ashley Lam chanced upon a company of indigenous bee hunters who offered them a taste of fresh, jungle honey.  

The honey was pure, organic, unadulterated, raw, flavoured only by the flowers that the honeybees visit for nectar and pollen, unlike the honey they have tasted previously….

And while Paul was new to the honey business, Ashley was already involved in honey retail business since 2007, hence began a business partnership of Jungle House in 2018….

I definitely had an awesome time trying out their honey.. did you know that honey can also be bitter!!! That’s the Royal Black honey and naturally it is densely nutritious!!! Personally I love the Royal White (Kiawe flower nectar),Jungle’s Heart (Strawberry flower nectar), Yellow Love (Linden flower nectar) and Roast Cube (coffee flower nectar)!!!

And be sure to try out their Russian Honey cakes      (first originated when it was created for the Russian queen) and “Honey-misu” - a healthier version of Tiramisu but just as delicious if not more dessert!!!!! Am sooooo loving it!! My personal favourites!!!!

A World of Flavours with Potatoes USA

Potatoes USA is celebrating World Nutrition Day with the theme “A World Of Flavours” which falls on May 28. And with that, 20 key Malaysian social media influencers including yours truly, got busy whipping up a repertoire of tantalizing and nutritious dishes using U.S. potatoes as a key ingredient, at the TCH Foodworks Culinary Workspace in PJ, recently.

Did you know that U.S. potatoes, whether fresh or frozen, are a very versatile ingredient that could inspire a wide repertoire of dishes—from appetisers, soups, main dishes to desserts. In addition, U.S. potatoes are nutrient-dense providing energy, key vitamins and minerals and is more energy-packed than any other popular vegetables.  

And in case you are asking, no, U.S. potatoes does not make you fat!!!! According to consultant dietitian Indra Balaratnam one medium U.S. potato provides about 110 calories of easy-to-digest calories, has zero cholesterol, zero sodium and zero fat.  U.S. potatoes are also a nutrient dense vegetable making it a healthy food choice to maintain the family’s health. 

One medium U.S. Potato contains 26 grams of carbohydrates (9% daily value) to fuel one’s muscles and brain, and protein to aid in building cells and muscles.  In addition, U.S. Potatoes are rich in Vitamin C (30% daily value) which makes healthier meals and play a key role in supporting the body’s immune system.  

Ms Tania Lee, a sports dietitian shared tips with us on the benefits of U.S. Potatoes for those leading active, athletic lifestyles. “Potatoes can fuel the body and boost sport performance.  Carbohydrates are a key fuel for muscles during exercise and for its recovery after one’s workout session hence it is crucial for optimal physical and mental performance. 

“Potatoes have 3 grams of protein per serving which are great building blocks for growth and a key component of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues. Potassium is a mineral that is an electrolyte for muscles to function well. One U.S. Potato gives you 15% of your daily potassium serving, and that’s more than what a medium banana provides,” explained Tania.

At the event, dietitian Indra Balaratnam created four scrumptious and healthy recipes using U.S. potatoes – U.S. Russet Potato Muffins, U.S. Potato Feta & Parsley Croquette, U.S. Russet Potato Green Apple Kerabu and Texmex Style U.S. Potato Skins (do scroll down for the recipe below).  Indra explained that these dishes are easy to make and are popular with Malaysians as their flavours are appetizing and easily titillate the palates to serve at any family gatherings as well as for quick meals. 

We then were allowed to put our aprons and caps on and created our recipes using U.S. Potatoes which reflected the versatility, variety of tastes, scrumptiousness, and simplicity in their creations… my partner Faiz ( www.instagram.com/ziafmihar ) and I prepared  a healthy version of loaded mashed potatoes as we thought it was a popular family favourite dish and made sure all our ingredients were healthy … 

our  loaded mashed potato was made with U.S. Potatoes, cauliflower, carrots, greek yogurt, low fat milk and did not contain any oil except from the natural oil from the beef brisket we used…and even that was not sauteed with oil but rather just on its own…

Recipe Title: TEXMEX STYLE U.S. POTATO SKINS
Description of the recipe: Vegetarian 
Recipe by: Indra Balaratnam, Consultant Dietitian
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time:  25 minutes
Ready Time: 45 minutes
Potato Type: US Russet
Serves: 4
Prep Method: Panfry, Microwave, Broil/Grill
Course: Side dish, Light meal

Ingredients
2 medium US potatoes – scrub the skin and pat dry
50 grams chopped red onion
1 jalapeño chilli pepper -- seeded and minced
30 grams cherry tomatoes -- diced
1/3 cup canned black beans -- drained and rinsed
1/3 cup frozen corn kernels
2 tsp ground cumin
4 Tablespoons shredded cheddar cheese
4 Tablespoons fat-free sour cream 
Salt & black pepper to taste
Finely chopped spring onion

Preparation:
Prick 2 medium US Russet Potatoes and microwave on high for 6 minutes. Check for doneness by gently squeezing them.

They should be soft to the touch. 
Preheat the oven grill to 200 degrees Celsius. Slice each potato in half lengthwise.

Scoop out potato flesh, leaving a 1/4-inch shell. Set the potatoes flesh aside for later. 

Place potatoes on a foil-lined baking sheet. Spray with cooking spray and sprinkle with salt. Broil for 5 minutes, or until crisp and golden.

Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a pan. Add chopped onion and jalapeño and cook for 3 minutes. 

Add the chopped cherry tomatoes, black beans, corn and cumin and cook for 5 more minutes.

Mix the cooked bean and corn mixture to the potato flesh. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 

Remove potatoes from oven, using tongs to carefully flip over. Pack each potato skin with the bean and US Russet potato mixture. Top with shredded cheese, dividing evenly. 

Return the potatoes into the oven and grill for about 4 minutes, or until the cheese melts slightly. Remove from oven to cool for 10 minutes. Top each with a tablespoon of fat-free sour and sprinkle with finely chopped spring onion.
