Most of us, or all of us have heard of the dreaded Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease right...The Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease/HFMD cases in Malaysia are caused by Coxsackie Virus A16 (CA16) and Enterovirus 71 (EV71) strains.
According to the Ministry of Health Malaysia, there was a high incidence of HFMD last year, with a total of 23,454 cases of HFMD reported from January 3 to August 6 nationwide, which is an average of 757 cases per week. The country was placed under the “alert level” at that point of time following the outbreak of HFMD nationwide....
The HFMD is highly contagious as it spreads easily through physical contact and/or from contaminated surfaces, which is why it occurs in outbreaks. If you are lucky enough to just get a mild case of HFMD , you can recover fully after the acute illness in 7 to 10 days. But.. if your case happens to be one of the severe cases you could actually develop viral meningitis or encephalitis or even poliomyelitis-like paralysis, and may need to be hospitalised for very much longer....
Children are more likely to be susceptible to infection and illness from these viruses, because they are less likely than adults to have antibodies and be immune from previous exposures to them. At present, there is no specific treatment available for HFMD.
Symptoms of HFMD include fever, poor appetite, malaise, and sore throat. After one or two days after the initial symptoms appear, painful sores will begin to develop in the mouth as small red spots which often may blister before they become ulcers. On top of that, non-itchy blister-like rashes would form on the hands, feet and mouth
Everyone is at risk of HFMD infection, but it happens mainly in children under 10 years old as they are more prone to infection.
Because of this, we really should make the simple act of hand washing of great importance in the family to
lower the risk of getting infected by the disease. Maintaining cleanliness of home, schools and offices is also very crucial....
And to help with this, BETADINE®, the trusted brand worldwide, has introduced an antiseptic wash called BETADINE® Antiseptic Skin Cleanser that kills 99.99% of the leading strains of causing Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD), a viral infection that has large increase of cases in Malaysia recently, affecting mostly young children.
The enteroviruses of majority HFMD cases, EV71 AND CA16, are a type of non-enveloped viruses that are resistant to many alcohol and phenolic disinfectants. However, In-vitro studies conducted by Dr Tan Eng Lee, Centre Director of Singapore Polytechnic’s Centre for Biomedical and Life Sciences, has shown that the BETADINE® Antiseptic Skin Cleanser passed EN14476 test standard, achieved at least a log 4 reduction, or 99.99% success rate, in killing the EV71 and CA16 viruses. EN14476 is recognised by EU authorities and experts as a credible testing standard for determining virucidal activity of a hand wash or hand hygiene product
The BETADINE® Antiseptic Skin Cleanser contains the active ingredient, 7.5% povidone-iodine, which is scientifically proven to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses that cause infections.
The antiseptic wash has a distinctive golden brown colour that helps to indicate the areas of the skin that the user has washed without staining the skin, fingernails or hair. Due to its colour, it is extremely helpful in determining if children or adults have washed their hands thoroughly.
In addition to that, BETADINE® Antiseptic Skin Cleanser is suitable to be used daily for a period at risk of an infectious disease, such as HFMD.
Affordably priced at RM9.90 (60ml) and RM12.90 (100ml), everyone should have a bottle of the BETADINE® Antiseptic Skin Cleanser in their handbag or toiletry bag, so go get yours now from any leading pharmaceutical establishments and healthcare providers.
