Hakim Amir mula melibatkan diri dalam pengulasan sukan sejak menyertai Astro pada tahun 1996. Ketika itu beliau terlibat dalam ulasan untuk Liga Perdana Inggeris (BPL). Minat yang mendalam dalam pengulasan sukan juga telah menyaksikan peluang diberi kepada beliau oleh pengurusan Astro Supersport untuk mengulas dalam Bahasa Inggeris beberapa liga seperti Liga Jepun dan juga Liga Amerika Syarikat. Beliau juga pernah berpeluang mengulas acara sukan lain seperti Sukan SEA, SUKMA, Bowling Terbuka Malaysia, Liga Bola Tampar Malaysia dan banyak lagi. Idola beliau dalam bidang pengulasan ialah Datuk Rahim Razali, Hasbullah Awang, Zainal Din, mendiang Luciano Da Valle (Brazil) dan Martin Tyler (UK)
