We woke up early , had our breakfast and headed to the Kuah jetty, located quite close to the yacht club there where we waited patiently as the boatman filled the petrol and do his preparations before our little trip.
My stepson and stepdaughter's friend took the opportunity to challenge each other on a game of checkers using just a old piece of drawn on wood and PVC bottle caps.
Members of the Rashidi clan all excited and ready for the boat ride. Believe it or not, my mother mother has never ever been on such a boat ride before, according to her..Could it be not having a sense of adventure? Heheh... I don't know but I am pretty more adventurous and this is my errmm... countless boat ride.
Yeah... this is because my ex husband and my (late) ex father in law use to 'captain' their boats as well as I have gone on various island hoppings, speed boat rides and fishing trips as well as having taken boat trips to Pangkor Laut, Redang, Perhentian islands and Phang Nga Bay / James Bond Island in Phuket..
For me, there is always something thrilling as well as refreshing as well as scary on a boat ride. But fortunately I am a seasoned traveller etc.. and do not suffer from sea sickness and so on... but come to think of it, none of the Rashidi clan on this trip felt unwell on the boat ride... bravo... bravo.. hehehe
Among the view we saw... a humble fisherman, casting his net, little rock formations aka future islands.. there are more then 99 islands in the archipelago of Langkawi...
Our first stop since we started our trip from Kuah Jetty was at the lovely Pulau Beras Basah.
It was just a brief 45 minutes stop on this beautiful powdery white beach. Besides the inviting powdery-white sandy beach and the lush verdant backdrop, the waters around Pulau Beras Basah also offer other interesting incidences.
This is said that there is a school of playful dolphins that sometimes some around to pay a visit here... However, the dolphins are quite elusive and rarely show up, so if you get to meet them, you are so fortunate.. We did not get to see them....
The beach was definitely picturesque and it was a beautiful place to take lots of photos and selfies....
As the Beras Basah island isn’t very commercialized, there is nothing much around except for the hordes of island hopping tourists that are dropped off. You can take some time out for yourself and with your friends or family and relax with a book, sunbathe, or go for a refreshing swim in the clear blue waters.
We took the opportunity to take a dip in the shallow and clear waters and it was definitely refreshing.
We then left the beach and headed back to out boat once our 45 minutes was up to continue on the next island.
Our next stop was at a very fascinating island....
This island is called the ‘Pulau Singa Besar’ , or translated, the Big Lion Island; the boat stops quite a distance away from the island shore and we were given the amazing chance to watch the king of the skies – eagles – as they soar overhead.
Being one of the more gorgeous islands in the Langkawi archipelago, Pulau Singa Besar is considered quite a magnificent spot and should definitely be on your list of places to visit when in Langkawi!
Nestled between two islands, Pulau Beras Basah and Pulau Dayang Bunting, Pulau Singa Besar in Langkawi is an oasis of turquoise waters, swaying palm trees, rain-forests, white sandy beaches and majestic limestone formations!
This island is completely untouched by humans, to the point where it doesn’t have any sort of construction on it, not even washrooms for the folks who happen to alight on the beach! This island is said to be home to some of the most rare and unique species of flora and fauna in the whole of Southeast Asia!
For bird lovers, the Eagle Watching tradition on Pulau Singa Besar is something that you cannot afford to miss. Eagles love chicken meat, and will come very close to your boat to get what your guide throws into the air! Grab this golden opportunity to click a few photos and watch these majestic birds up-close.
These eagles wait for the sound of the arriving speedboats and the chicken pieces they throw to the middle of the sea. Within no time the hundreds of brown and some white eagles are flying above your head. It’s a beautiful sight as they grab the pieces and soar away with it.
Like all other names and islands in Langkawi, Pulau Singa Besar has its very own special legend after which it is named! Pulau Singa Besar stands for ‘The Island of the Big Lion’, and is said to be once upon a time, the home of a giant who had tamed a lion and kept it as a pet!
Our trip continued along the lovely turquoise waters which was sadly, littered with styrofoam, plastic, plastic bottles and so on, which we can clearly see floating occasionally in the otherwise beautiful and tranquil sea.
It was not long before we arrived at our third and final destination....
Tasik Dayang Bunting is Langkawi's largest lake and resembles the shape of a pregnant lady lying on her back. Some people believe the waters of the lake possess mystical powers as a local princess has blessed the waters. Because of the blessings, it is believed that any woman who is unable to conceive may have a child after drinking the water from the lake.
The name of the island means "Island of the Pregnant Maiden". It has a touching and fairy-tale-like legend, making the island seems to be more mystical and amazing at the same time.
The story of this island began when a beautiful fairy princess – Mambang Sari and Mat Teja, a man who fell in love with the princess from the moment he saw her. Mat Teja met Mambang Sari at the lake and he was attracted by her beauty. From the advises of a wise old man, Mat Teja finally managed to win the heart of Mambang Sari.
Happily living on earth, Mambang Sari bore Mat Teja a son. However, their happiness did not last when their baby died not long after. Undergoing a traumatic and tremendous pain, Mambang Sari decided to lay her child to rest in peace in the lake. At the same time, she blessed all the childless and infertile women to be able to conceive after drinking from the water in the lake.
Believe it or not, there is some proof to the story. At a certain angle, you will be able to see the island, resembling a pregnant lady, lying on her back. Some people might take it as a coincidence or the act of nature, but it somehow creates an amazing link between the island and her name.
For the adventurous who wants more, from the entrance, you will have to walk for another 15 minutes to reach the lake. Concrete walking path has been built all along the way thus making walking in the forest easier. You have to be careful of the monkeys around. Basically, they will not attack but it is advisable to take good care of your own belongings, especially bags.
Near the lake, there is a small shop selling some souvenirs and providing paddle boat and life jacket rental service. There is a small separated area beside the stall where hundreds of cat fishes live there. You can put your feet into the pool and enjoy the natural fish spa. Besides, swimming is also allowed in the lake or you can just lay on the wooden platform, enjoy a sun bath under the wonderful lake view.
It is said that the Tasik Dayang Bunting has another 'magical' place. You can take a walk around the take and see the ‘Miracle Border”. There is a narrow wooden bridge that can lead you there. This “Miracle Border” signifies a slim borderline between the lake and the sea. Amazingly, the lake is not salty even though the distance from the sea just a mere 30 meter.
Pulau Dayang Bunting is a place filled with love, magnificence, mystery and miracle. It is no doubt, an attraction not to be missed in Langkawi.
We definitely had a great time island hopping on these three islands. I would say that a trip to Langkawi is not complete if you do not take the chance to visit these islands or head to Pulau Payar (which is my next destination the next time I happen to come to Langkawi)
