YAYASAN SIME DARBY ARTS FESTIVAL 2016

Most of us enjoy performing arts. It is after all the language that draws people together...and I was at the klpac surrounded by VIPs as well as a few top performers a couple of fays ago as they announced the Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival 2016 (YSDAF2016)scheduled for the 20th and 21st August 2016.....

This would be the second of its kind from the debut festival back in 2014 that garnered over 15,000 visitors, and YSDAR2016 promise more of the crowds favorites as well as exciting new programmes in line with the festival's theme of ARTS EDUCATION + THE FUTURE

Joe Hasham OAM, Artistic Director of klpac and YSDAF said this was also to bring awareness of the importance of arts education in schools and institutions. And that there will be a dedicated Kids Zone with child-centric activities during the morning of the festival finale...

Yayasan Sime Darby Chairman YABhg Tun Musa Hitam said that the theme for the second installation of YSDAF was chosen because education is important as the springboard to develop new creative talents, aside from bridging the current gaps in the arts industry...  happens to be the first education=themed arts festival in Malaysia and this year long festival has successfully brought together unique art ranging from age-old wayang kulit to dance performances and movie screenings.. Community outreach projects and competitions are also in the planning... And all these activities that has been held over the year will finally colminate in the two day finale in August!!!

The festival weekend will kick off with a Walk to the Future Parade in collaboration with Saito College, one of the leading design colleges in Malaysia.  There will be a kaleidoscopic procession of vivid colours beginning from the grounds of the Kuala Lumpur Performance Arts Centre (klpac) along the Sultan Azlan Shah Road and back to klpac....

Another key highlight would be the unveiling of two commisioned works by the winners of the YSDAF Pitch Start grant launched last year.

Paras Bunyi Collective is set to deliver a multi-sensory experience to festivalgoers, while CubeArt Stage & Performance will premier a full-lenght theatrical production entitled Bulan Separa Penuh

The winner of YSDAF2016's Future Living design competition was revealed as well. The winning design named The Reflect-O by a trio  who called themselves The P.L.Y took home the grand prize of the competition with their interpretation of a future outdoor pavilion that marries the festival theme with architectural skills and passion for the arts..

The entry, which is a series of tilted mirrors reflecting the present and the past will of course, be exhibited at the festival along with other notable submissions....so be sure to check it out there....

Members of the media and invited guests were then entertained by both a young and new acapella group along with a much older and established acapella group, The 4 of us and The Seasons Four...

The lineup for the YSDAF Gala Night is gonna thrill you!!! There will be feature performances by the Malaysian legendary 80's pop rock band, Alleycats, up and coming soul artist, Dasha Logan and the eclectic Fynn Jamal.

The Gala Night will also be made even more memorable with the staging of works by young talents under the mentoring of Dr. Joseph Gonzales, Tay Cher Siang, Lee Swee Keong, Lee Kok Leong and Harith Iskander in various field of the arts, namely dance, jazz, butoh, orchestra conducting and comedy respectively....The mentor-mentee programme, aptly named Master+ Murid, was launched in May this year with a mission to search for a new generation of Malaysian talents....

YSDAF2016 is set to become one of the 'must-attend' arts events of 2016. Festival hours will also be extended until 10pm to allow more performances and activities. YSDAF2016 is open to the public and is FREE!!!! So be sure to be there or be square!!!
