Why you must watch The Kid From The Big Apple...

This couple of months is all about amazing local bi-lingual /tri-lingual (in Ola-Bola’s case) movies. I am sure most of you have watched Ola Bola and was impressed with it, and even mesmerized by it.. many were moved to tears…

I am now telling you you have to keep your eyes, ears out for another amazing local movie, "The Kid From The Big Apple", which has a couple of Hong Kong actors/actresses starring in it and totally shot in Malaysia!!! I did so recognize the square near Masjid Jamek .....

And hey, do you know this movie recently won 4 awards at the 7th Macau International Movie Festival ?  Yes, this movie is THAT AMAZING!!!

The awards are for the film with the best writing, best actor, best supporting actor and for the best newcomers. It definitely got serious recognition at the Macau film festival, beating other tough competition, including Wilson Yip’s Ip Man 3 and Dante Lam’s To The Fore. Hah… watch the movie and you can see why!!!!

The poster above is  simple and might seem like nothing much to shout about but watch the trailer, or better still, go watch the movie yourself!!!

Sarah (Sarah Tan) an only child, was born and raised in New York, and because of her mother’s work commitment, her mother (Jessica Hester Hsuan) sent her back to her conservative grandfather in Malaysia (Tommy Tam) and left shortly after much to the disappointment of the old man (he has went all out of his way to even cook for her).

To rub salt into his wounds, his granddaughter is an obnoxious and ill-mannered brat who only whines and complains in English and refuses all his good intentions. He tries to get the neighbour’s son to translate for him in the hope of making his granddaughter understand his ground rules…..

But then again, if you look at Sarah's point of view, how would you like it if you were suddenly taken from some fancy big city and dump in the middle of nowhere in a strange, stinky place with someone who is supposedly related to you but whom you never even seen before....

After a heated argument with Sarah , Grandpa who is called Sifu by everyone flashes back on the time when he last saw his daughter. It was years ago when she was illegitimately pregnant with Sarah and arguing with her father that she has decided to follow her never-do-good boyfriend (who eventually left her as predicted by her father) to New York.. It was a moment when he told her that if she went to New York, she did not have to step foot back into the house and she told him defiantly that she had no intention of doing so...

It is definitely a highly recommended and a great movie for all ages and depict how the older generation who see the new younger millennials as poorly behaved with poor morals and the youngsters who on the other hand, with no patience or respect for their elders can eventually reach an understanding or a compromise and have a great relationship. It’s all about love, family relationships, righting misunderstandings, acceptance of each other’s faults, forgiveness, friendship and standing up for each other…

This 2-hour film produced by Three Production  is set to be released on 10th March. So be sure to book your tickets or mark your calendars...

Besides being an amazing movie about family ties and culture, do you know “The Kid From The Big Apple” is backed by Mah Sing group and I heard it said that the profits earned from the movie will be channeled to the Mah Sing Foundation, a CSR effort by the group, that raise funds for notable causes,  financial assistance and relief schemes for the poor.

I swear by three things, you will be laughing, you will be crying and you will also be laughing until you cry…do bring a packet of tissues, or maybe make it a box… LOL, but DO NOT MISS this movie…!!!

After all, it has to be something really amazing to be able beat the BIG BOYS like Ip Man 3 and To The Fore at the Macau International Film Festival right……

As for me, I enjoyed it so much at the media preview but I want to go back again with my mom, my daughter and husband next week to watch this….  Many people can relate to this movie, so bring the whole family to watch it...
